3D/4D Ultrasound - FAQs for Baby's First Photo

  • When is a good time for a 3D or 4D Ultrasound?

Anytime is good for an imaging ultrasound, but you will see different things at different times. Many women choose to come in twice or more to see their baby at various stages. At around 24-34 weeks, as babies are building more fat, more facial features can be seen. 3D and 4D imaging depends upon the baby's position, size and movement, so we cannot guarantee image quality due to those factors.

  • Can I have family and friends with me?

Yes. Our room will fit 6 extra people so feel free to bring them to enjoy the experience with you.

  • Do I need a full bladder for the 3D photos?

No. Eat and drink as usual. We do recommend keeping your body hydrated several days before your visit. Water, not soda, gets the best results.

  • What will determine the quality of the images?

    • Fetal position: Some babies come ready for their close-up and seem to be posing at every turn. Others cuddle up to the placenta or uterine wall, or hide behind their hands (and feet). We know you particularly want to see your baby's face and we do all we can to encourage baby to turn our way. We urge you to enjoy the fun and sometimes funny positions your baby prefers.
    • Maternal tissue: The more tissue the sound waves need to travel through, the less contrast the resulting images have. For this reason we often find we get better results with our fuller-figured clients around 32-34 weeks.
    • Fetal activity: It is always fun to see the baby in motion, but some of the best still photo results come when baby is asleep or still. (No caffeine please!)
